Heat brings together projects developed through Magnum Foundation’s 2023–25 Photography Expanded Fellowship, which supported photographers exploring new ways of telling stories about the climate crisis and the inextricable relationship between communities and land. Across eighteen landscapes around the world, these photographers encounter places where multiple timelines coexist: histories embedded in the land, environmental transformations unfolding in the present, and futures that remain to be imagined.
Rather than depicting climate change solely through images of catastrophe, the projects look at the longer histories and lived experiences behind environmental disruption. They reveal how landscapes become archives—holding memories of extraction and displacement, but also knowledge, resilience and forms of connection passed between generations. The past is not behind us; it continues to shape the conditions of the present.
Across these eighteen projects, the climate crisis is understood not as a single event or distant future, but as a condition unfolding across multiple timescales. The photographs bring past, present and future into the same frame, asking us to consider how the landscapes we inherit shape the worlds we are capable of imagining and what might remain for those who come after us.
